Use Pilsner Beer Glasses To Drink The Champagne Of Beers

Pilsner beer glasses were invented in 1842. That's the date when the first batch of pilsner beer was brewed in the sleepy Bohemian town of Plzen (Pilsen). Pilsner beer, a type of pale lager, was created from the pale malts and very soft water found in the area. Combined with Bavarian lagering techniques and strong hops, the pilsner's clear, golden brew caused a social sensation. Coincidental improvements in travel and communications allowed the popularity of pilsner to spread throughout Europe. At that point, any glass became a pilsner glass.

Drinking a modern pilsner from a proper glass reveals that the beer has a very pale golden color. The distinctive hop aroma wafts out of the pilsner glass and tickles your nose with every sip. The heady smell warns your taste buds to prepare for the crisp lager flavor. Before mechanical refrigeration was invented, pilsner beers were brewed in open barrels in cool caves. The use of bottom-fermenting yeast improved the flavor and clarity of the beer.

Some breweries still brew pilsner in the traditional method, using open barrels in caves. The pilsner beer taste produced from these old techniques is compared to that created in more modern steel tanks. That doesn't mean you should use a metal cup as a pilsner glass, however.

The description of pilsner as the champagne of beers is not an exaggeration. North American brewers in particular market their pilsner beers as premium alcoholic beverages. Pilsner ensconced in a beautiful beer glass practically glows with a pale golden color. Some bars prefer to use pilsner glasses when mixing sparking wine cocktails. When using a stein or other opaque beer glass, the visual delight of pilsner is lost.

We associate the beer drinking experience with a solid mug, a tangy aroma, a crisp taste, and a carbonated crash against the taste buds. When drinking pilsner beers, however, you must also engage your sense of sight by using elegant pilsner beer glasses.
